Ronald Acuna Named Baseball America Minor League POY

Sep 10, 2017 9:55 AM

Ronald Acuna has been named the 2017 Baseball America Minor League Player of the Year.

Past winners include Frank Thomas (1990), Derek Jeter (1994) and Mike Trout (2011).

Acuna, an outfielder in the Atlanta Braves' system, led the minor leagues with 181 hits en route to a .325/.374/.522 season. Acuna also had 21 home runs while stealing 44 bases in 64 attempts.

"I had an opportunity with (Ken Griffey) Jr., with Alex (Rodriguez), and now Acuna," Gwinnett hitting coach John Moses, who played and coached with Griffey and Rodriguez in the Mariners system, said. "I mean, you can throw him into that lot of guys, for me, at 19 years old. He's only going to get better. The guys are special when they come around like this."

J.D. Martinez Blasts Four Home Runs

Sep 5, 2017 1:21 AM

Diamondbacks slugger J.D. Martinez became the 18th player in major league history to hit four home runs in one game, a feat more rare than a perfect game ... which we had for five innings in this game, making Arizona's 13-0 shutout over the slumping Dodgers one of the craziest games of any year.

Martinez homered against four different pitchers, belting no-doubters off Rich Hill in the fourth inning and then connecting in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings off Pedro Baez, Josh Fields and Wilmer Font.
